A PDO thread lift is a safe, minimally invasive aesthetic treatment option for patients who want long-lasting results but are uninterested in the costs and risks of a surgical facelift. It firms and shapes aging skin so that it appears more youthful.
What Are PDO Threads?
Polydioxanone (PDO) threads have been used in surgeries since the 1980s and are FDA approved. These threads can be placed and left inside the body because they dissolve over 4-6 months. When applied cosmetically, these threads provide immediate volume, firmness and smoothness. As an added benefit, while in the body they stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, which improves the appearance and condition of the skin for up to 1 year. They are a perfect alternative to a traditional facelift and you won’t have scars!
How Does A PDO Thread Lift Work?
During the procedure, dissolvable PDO threads are inserted just under the skin. As they are placed, the threads catch the underside of the skin and are then gently tightened. These threads have different shapes - barbed, smooth or twisted - to achieve different results. Multiple threads are applied during one session, and together they create a “mesh” that produces the lifting and firming effect. One of the best aspects of this technique is that it can be applied almost anywhere on the face or body, including the neck, legs, stomach and buttocks.
What Does the Process Look Like?
The first required step is a personal consultation with Heather to discuss your unique aesthetic goals. What you want to achieve will determine how many threads are used and where they are placed. Before the procedure begins, you’ll relax while the treatment area is numbed to prevent discomfort or pain. Heather will then precisely place the threads using thin needles. Treatment duration depends on how many threads are required and can range between 20 minutes to several hours.
How Long Does Recovery Take?
One of the best parts of a PDO thread lift is that there is essentially no down time. Patients can return to their normal schedules right away, but most choose to take a day or two off to let any swelling or bruising subside. Tylenol can relieve any discomfort, and gently applied cold packs help with swelling. It is important that patients take it easy for a couple of weeks and avoid high intensity exercise. This gives the body time to rest and adjust.
PDO Threads Seem Great! Are There Downsides?
There are few risks or side effects with a PDO thread lift, especially when compared with a full surgical facelift. After the procedure, most patients experience immediate puffiness, swelling or bruising, and feel discomfort for about 30 minutes. The treatment area tends to feel sore for 3 days. We recommend undergoing the procedure about 4 weeks before any planned events like weddings or reunions. This provides enough time to see the full effects of the treatment.
